Convert MS/Word to PDF in unix/linux

OpenOffice.org has a powerful support for plugings (called Macros) that allow a lot of additional functionality to be added to application. One common task is to convert MS/Word documents (.doc) into PDF. The recipe here uses Basic to program an OpenOffice.org macro to convert from DOC to PDF. We then illustrate how to turn this into a command line tool to convert from DOC to PDF. (This example was developed by DannyB.)

First, start up OpenOffice.org, perhaps as oowriter. Then from the Tools menu, select Macros, Organize Macros, OpenOffice.org Basic. A window will popup. Navigate, in the Macro from area, to My Macros, Standard, Module1. Edit the module to include just the following code:

REM ***** BASIC *****

Sub ConvertWordToPDF(cFile)
cURL = ConvertToURL(cFile)

' Open the document.
' Just blindly assume that the document is of a type that OOo will
' correctly recognize and open -- without specifying an import filter.
oDoc = StarDesktop.loadComponentFromURL(cURL, "_blank", 0, Array(MakePropertyValue("Hidden", True), ))

cFile = Left(cFile, Len(cFile) - 4) + ".pdf"
cURL = ConvertToURL(cFile)

' Save the document using a filter.
oDoc.storeToURL(cURL, Array(MakePropertyValue("FilterName", "writer_pdf_Export"), ))

oDoc.close(True)

End Sub

Function MakePropertyValue( Optional cName As String, Optional uValue ) As com.sun.star.beans.PropertyValue
Dim oPropertyValue As New com.sun.star.beans.PropertyValue
If Not IsMissing( cName ) Then
oPropertyValue.Name = cName
EndIf
If Not IsMissing( uValue ) Then
oPropertyValue.Value = uValue
EndIf
MakePropertyValue() = oPropertyValue
End Function

Save and exit from OpenOffice.org.

Now create a shell script, perhaps called doc2pdf in /usr/local/bin with:

#!/bin/sh

DIR=$(pwd)
DOC=$DIR/$1

/usr/bin/oowriter -invisible "macro:///Standard.Module1.ConvertWordToPDF($DOC)"

Then simply run it:

$ doc2pdf my.doc

and you should end up with a my.pdf!

The script is nothing perfect, and there is an issue in that the script will return before OpenOffice.org has finished its work. This, to convert a whole directory of files, you may want sonething like:

$ for i in *.doc; do echo $i; doc2pdf "$i"; sleep 5; done

Php Class : Word to PDF Converter in PHP using OpenOffice (Word2PDF)

Php Class : Word to PDF Converter in PHP using OpenOffice (Word2PDF)

Lots of people want to convert Word docs into PDF's (Word2PDF). Currenty there is no php class available to directly conver the doc to pdf file.Here's a Windows PHP converter of Word documents to PDF using OpenOffice via a COM wrapper of the OpenOffice API's. It's a lot of description for something fairly simple.
But to work around we need to install the openoffice in our windows system

<?php
set_time_limit(0);
function MakePropertyValue($name,$value,$osm){
$oStruct = $osm->Bridge_GetStruct("com.sun.star.beans.PropertyValue");
$oStruct->Name = $name;
$oStruct->Value = $value;
return $oStruct;
}
function word2pdf($doc_url, $output_url){
//Invoke the OpenOffice.org service manager
$osm = new COM("com.sun.star.ServiceManager") or die ("Please be sure that OpenOffice.org is installed.\n");
//Set the application to remain hidden to avoid flashing the document onscreen
$args = array(MakePropertyValue("Hidden",true,$osm));
//Launch the desktop
$oDesktop = $osm->createInstance("com.sun.star.frame.Desktop");
//Load the .doc file, and pass in the "Hidden" property from above
$oWriterDoc = $oDesktop->loadComponentFromURL($doc_url,"_blank", 0, $args);
//Set up the arguments for the PDF output
$export_args = array(MakePropertyValue("FilterName","writer_pdf_Export",$osm));
//Write out the PDF
$oWriterDoc->storeToURL($output_url,$export_args);
$oWriterDoc->close(true);
}
$output_dir = "C:/dev/openofficeintegration/docconverter/";
$doc_file = "C:/dev/openofficeintegration/docconverter/DpmR5Reqv1.20.doc";
$pdf_file = "DpmR5Reqv1.20.pdf";
$output_file = $output_dir . $pdf_file;
$doc_file = "file:///" . $doc_file;
$output_file = "file:///" . $output_file;
word2pdf($doc_file,$output_file);
?>

Browser Detection In Javascript

Until one browser remains standing on the web (if ever), browser detection will continue to be part of any good JavaScripter's life. Whether you're gliding a div across the screen or creating an image rollover, it's fundamental that only relevant browsers pick up on your code. In this tutorial we'll probe the navigator object of JavaScript, and show how to use it to perform browser detection, whether the subject is Firefox, Internet Explorer 7, Opera, etc.

Linux / Unix Command: unzip

The following examples illustrate typical uses of the command unzip for unpackaging "archive" files, also called "zip files". The archive files are assumed to be generated using software such as zip, which uses the standard zip file format.

To use unzip to extract all members of the archive letters.zip into the current directory and subdirectories below it, creating any subdirectories as necessary:

unzip letters

To extract all members of letters.zip into the current directory only:

unzip -j letters

To test letters.zip, printing only a summary message indicating whether the archive is OK or not:

unzip -tq letters

To test all zipfiles in the current directory, printing only the summaries:

unzip -tq \*.zip

(The backslash before the asterisk is only required if the shell expands wildcards, as in Unix; double quotes could have been used instead, as in the source examples below.) To extract to standard output all members of letters.zip whose names end in .tex, auto-converting to the local end-of-line convention and piping the output into more(1):

unzip -ca letters \*.tex | more

To extract the binary file paper1.dvi to standard output and pipe it to a printing program:

unzip -p articles paper1.dvi | dvips

To extract all FORTRAN and C source files--*.f, *.c, *.h, and Makefile--into the /tmp directory:

unzip source.zip "*.[fch]" Makefile -d /tmp

(the double quotes are necessary only in Unix and only if globbing is turned on). To extract all FORTRAN and C source files, regardless of case (e.g., both *.c and *.C, and any makefile, Makefile, MAKEFILE or similar):

unzip -C source.zip "*.[fch]" makefile -d /tmp

To extract any such files but convert any uppercase MS-DOS or VMS names to lowercase and convert the line-endings of all of the files to the local standard (without respect to any files that might be marked ``binary''):

unzip -aaCL source.zip "*.[fch]" makefile -d /tmp

To extract only newer versions of the files already in the current directory, without querying (NOTE: be careful of unzipping in one timezone a zipfile created in another--ZIP archives other than those created by Zip 2.1 or later contain no timezone information, and a ``newer'' file from an eastern timezone may, in fact, be older):

unzip -fo sources

To extract newer versions of the files already in the current directory and to create any files not already there (same caveat as previous example):

unzip -uo sources

To display a diagnostic screen showing which unzip and zipinfo options are stored in environment variables, whether decryption support was compiled in, the compiler with which unzip was compiled, etc.:

unzip -v

In the last five examples, assume that UNZIP or UNZIP_OPTS is set to -q. To do a singly quiet listing:

unzip -l file.zip

To do a doubly quiet listing:

unzip -ql file.zip

(Note that the ``.zip'' is generally not necessary.) To do a standard listing:

unzip --ql file.zip

or

unzip -l-q file.zip

or

unzip -l--q file.zip

(Extra minuses in options don't hurt.)

Extract rar files in Linux

RAR is a proprietary compression format widely used today. It’s supposedly has 30% higher compression rate when compared with WinZip. If you download large torrent then chances are you are are already well acquainted with RAR.

I use RAR on my Windows and Linux boxes everyday and today I’ll show you how to extract RAR files from the Linux command line.

In Linux, to extract a RAR file you would use the unrar command. The unrar binaries are typically not included with the default Linux install so you will have to install them either through the package manager or by downloading binaries from rarlab.com

Let’s get to the HowTo now,

Extract a RAR file into the curren directory.

# unrar e [filename].rar

Extract a RAR file with the full file path.

# unrar x [filename].rar

List contents of a RAR file

# unrar l [filename].rar

Test intergruty of a RAR file

# unrar t [filename].rar

If you face any problems obtaining,installing or using unrar please contact me. I will be glad to help.

What does Google Chrome offer developers?

What does Google Chrome offer developers?

Tony Patton, TechRepublic
My first reaction to Google's introduction of a beta version of its Chrome browser was: do we really need another browser? So I decided to take Chrome for a test drive.
First impressions of Chrome
Google touts Chrome as an open source browser project, which means its main competitor seems to be Firefox and not Internet Explorer. The browser rendering engine was developed with the help of WebKit (http://webkit.org/). Chrome is up and running after a painless download (http://www.google.com/chrome) and install.
The first thing I noticed is the minimalist interface and its quick loading. The interface uses tabs (which most every browser does these days), but the tabs are located at the top of the window above the address bar. There is no bulky menu bar at the top and no status bar at the bottom, so it took a while to get accustomed to it. This video offers a first look at Chrome (http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/security/?p=572). This new browser maintains phishing and malware lists and warns users when they attempt to visit known harmful sites.
1. Google created a separate team to optimise the JavaScript engine used in Chrome. The result is the V8 JavaScript engine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V8_JavaScript_engine), which does show some improvements over its counterparts. (The various caveats of JavaScript performance are beyond this article, but there is a good discussion available online (http://ejohn.org/blog/javascript-performance-rundown/).
2. Each tab within the browser runs in its own process -- a sort of sandbox within the browser. However, browser plug-ins are not covered in this security model. One interesting aspect of Chrome is its ActiveX support. I read many articles touting its lack of support for ActiveX, but there is an ActiveX plug-in available (http://google-chrome.com/chrome-plugins/activex-plug-in/).
3. An interesting feature is the ability to browse in so-called incognito mode, which means the browser maintains no history or cookies of sites visited in this mode.
4.Gears (http://gears.google.com/) is a standard component. This is more a feature for developers, as it provides a platform for creating Web applications that can run offline.
Given the beta status of Chrome, it is no surprise to find a few bugs. The browser crashed quite a few times while browsing various sites. Maybe Google is taking a page from Microsoft in releasing software to the general public before it is ready.

What Chrome offers to developers
With Internet Explorer and Firefox capturing most users these days, why should a Web developer concern themselves with a new offering? First, given Google's footprint on the Web, it is hard to ignore anything new from the company. Of course, Google Apps (http://cgi.cnet.com.au/link/?id=23183) is supposed to take market share from Microsoft Office but that remains to be seen. Other offerings like Google Talk have failed to dominate its space, so the Google name doesn't guarantee anything.
I like to use Firefox since it offers so many development tool plug-ins, but I still have to make sure my applications perform properly in Internet Explorer. From a developer viewpoint, Chrome provides a few tools for working with Web pages. The list includes Gears, as well as the following:

Web Inspector: This allows you to take a closer look at any element on the currently open page. It is available by right-clicking on an element. It allows you to browse page elements and view object properties and style. This is a feature from the WebKit base. |> JavaScript console: This allows you to enter command-line JavaScript code that can access page elements. It opens within the Web Inspector window -- located in the bottom portion.
JavaScript debugger: A rudimentary command line JavaScript debugger ( http://cgi.cnet.com.au/link/?id=23184). There is nothing intuitive about using this feature. (I did find a good tutorial (http://www.pascarello.com/lessons/browsers/ChromeDebugHelp.html) online.)
Task Manager: This allows you to view the current processes running within Chrome; it is analogous to the Task Manager available in Windows. It shows the system resources by a process. This includes memory, network, and CPU usage. A button is provided to end a process along with link to a report that breaks down memory usage for individual processes.
All in all, this is a less than impressive list of tools for the Web developer. It remains to be seen whether more tools will become available to rival what is available with Firefox or Internet Explorer 8 (http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/programming-and-development/?p=588). At this time, I will stick with Firefox while keeping an eye on Chrome.
Don't ditch your current browser just yet
For developers, the current beta version of Chrome provides no reason to switch from Firefox or even the latest Internet Explorer version. As for everyday end users, they will stick with whatever comes with their machine (Internet Explorer) with no reason to switch. Maybe Chrome can carve out a small slice of the browser market.
But what if Google makes it necessary? The company has an overwhelming Web presence, so it would be easy to serve up pages that provide Chrome-specific features. This sounds far-fetched, but it is something to consider. Have you used the current version of Chrome? If so, what are your impressions of Chrome? Share your thoughts.

Install a Java plugin for Google Chrome

How to install a Java plugin for Google Chrome

Google released a new browser dubbed Chrome recently – you might have noticed if you haven’t been hiding under a rock this past week. Probably due to its Beta status, Google Chrome requires a few helping hints to get Java working as a plugin.

Here’s how to get the Sun Java plugin working in Google Chrome:

Enthiran : The first look with EXCLUSIVE

The first look with EXCLUSIVE details…

Oh… what a fantastic, fabulous, excellent but meaningful design of Superstar Rajini's Eanthiran – The Robot!

Hats off to Shankar for his fantastic work to show our Thalaivar in a very different tone!

One more important aspect is Rajini's appearance in the design without his manly mustache. But insider in Shankar's camp reveals that the director is having some novel ideas to show Rajini in a completely different look and surely it will be a revelation to Superstar Rajini's fans.

For the first time in the history of Rajini's films, the heroine's name also equally appears in the publicity designs. Official sources from Shankar's camp confirmed that our Thalaivar only suggested the director to give equal importance to the heroine Aishwarya Rai also.

So Rajini asked the director to give equal importance to the former Miss Universe and numero uno of Indian female artists in his film. According to the original story (written by Sujatha), there are two powerful characters in the film. The yet to disclosed secret is our superstar is going play both the roles, one is the human and the other one is powerful robot.

The name of the heroine in this film is Nila and there will be an important character comes to entertain the children. It is Jeano, the Machine Dog with the sense of human.

So… keep watching… A lot more come on our one and only superstar Rajini's Enthiran- The Robot!

Sun Tv new Comedy Channel

GOOGLE Chrome - Brilient Browser

(Visual Browser History):

(Super Clean Contextual Menu):

7. Start Menu / Quick Launch

How to Create the Good CV

TIPS ON WRITING A GOOD CV

What is a CV?

Your CV is your marketing brochure through which the prospective employer decides whether he wants to see you for an interview or not.

What is the purpose of a CV?

The purpose of your CV is to fetch you an interview call.

How to write a good CV?

Include the relevant information. Your CV may require a little bit of modification according to the type of opening you are applying for. You may need to expose different facets of your personality and work experience for different openings.

Prioritize the Information

A recruiter is not interested in knowing your father's name on opening up your CV. He would rather prefer to know about your educational background, if you are a fresher and your work experience, if you an experienced job seeker. Prioritize the information in the CV to maintain the attention of the recruiter.

Emphasize at Right Place

Learn to emphasize at right place in the CV. If you think, any of your particular achievements gives you a cutting edge over other job seekers for a particular opening, emphasize on it. For e.g. if you are a fresher and you have been a topper of your college or university, it is worth mentioning and emphasizing in the CV. Similarly, if you are an experienced worker and your particular achievement has been acknowledged by your employer, which you think can add more value to your CV while applying for a particular position, emphasize on it.

Use more Impactful Words

Use words which demostrate your control over things. For e.g. managed, achieved, counselled.

Use Figures

Use some figures to show the extent of your activities and their impact. For e.g. Planned raw material requirements for 10 manufacturing units of the company, across 5 states.

Don't be verbose

Try to keep your CV precise and to the point. Don't fill it up with extra words. You might land up losing the recruiters attention.
Don't dump the information

A neat CV attracts the recruiter more than the one which has information dumped on it. Provide all the relevant information but in a neat and attractive manner.

Check for Spellings and Grammar

Try to keep your CV free of any spelling mistakes and bad grammar. They put the recruiter off.

Key areas of a Good CV

While writing a CV you must first think, what is it that you want to communicate to the recruiter through your CV. Now, write your CV keeping your objective in mind. Following are the key areas which if well written catch the immediate attention of the employer.

Executive/Career Summary

A well written, short and simple executive summary at the beginning of your CV will catch the immediate attention of the recruiter. Keep it short and to the point while trying to focus on your key strengths and achievements, relevant to the position.

Work Experience/Educational Background

If you have a work experience, mention it after the executive summary in a chronologically descending manner with the job profile. If you are a fresher educational back ground should find this place in your CV. Mentioning acievements rather than responsibilities is more impactful.

Mention about your Achievements

Mentioning achievements out of work also plays an important role. For e.g. Elected college vice president during graduation. This demostrates your leadership quality.

Avoid using "I"," my" in your CV

The recruiter knows well that you are talking about yourself in your CV. Avoid the use of words like I , my in your CV. It makes you look egomaniac.

There are two kinds of people, those who do the work & those who take the credit.
Try to be in 1st group there is less competition there.

Rajini New Movie robot is changed as Enthiram the Robot

Rajini New Movie robot is changed as Enthiram the Robot
